Stemming from Sanskrit words, Ardhanarishvara is a Hindu mythological character that is said to be the combined form of Shiva and Parvati. It is depicted as half male and half female with its earliest depictions dating to as far back as the first century CE. Iconography of Ardhanarishivar can be found in Puranas and represent the synthesis of masculine and feminine energies. This sculpture is replicated in Panchaloha.
